History

Stubbs Prosthetics & Orthotics Inc.

Stubbs Prosthetics & Orthotics began on August 1, 1981, when William V. Stubbs, his wife Barbara, and their son Mark opened their first office under the name Stubbs Limb & Brace. With deep roots in the orthotics and prosthetics industry, William and Mark brought technical expertise and a shared vision: to provide patients with personalized and compassionate care.

In 1984, that vision expanded when Melanie Stubbs—Mark’s wife—joined the business. Starting in the lab as a technician, Melanie quickly became an integral part of daily operations. Over time, she transitioned to the front office, working closely alongside Barbara. Her dedication was officially recognized in 1997 when she became the company’s Secretary-Treasurer.

As the company grew, so did its mission. In 1994, Stubbs Limb & Brace became Stubbs Prosthetics & Orthotics, Inc., reflecting a broader commitment to both disciplines and a deeper connection to the evolving needs of patients. Just a few years later, in 1998, Mark purchased the business from his father, continuing the family legacy while ushering in a new chapter of growth.

That spirit of growth was felt beyond the Chattanooga office. In 1999, Stubbs opened a second location in Chattanooga. Housed in a building shared with Chattanooga Bone & Joint Surgeons, it was the company’s first full-time satellite office. This expansion into new areas was driven by a simple goal: to be where patients needed them most.

The success of that office led to further evolution. In 2004, Stubbs moved its second location to Dalton, Georgia, making a deliberate choice to serve a wider community. What began as a limited-hours satellite office quickly became a vital part of the region, prompting continued investment in facilities and staff.

In 2006, Stubbs extended its footprint again—this time into Hixson, TN. Responding to a growing demand for high-quality prosthetic and orthotic care. Just a year later, in 2007, the main Chattanooga office was relocated to a modern, patient-centered space at 5715 Uptain Road, Suite 5800. This move wasn’t just about space, it was about creating an environment where patients could feel supported and where the team could thrive.

Stubbs’ most recent chapter of growth came in 2020 when the Dalton office moved into a larger, more functional space at 1213 Broadrick Drive. This new location continues to serve the community with the same heart and commitment that has guided the company since day one.

Through decades of change, Stubbs has remained a family-founded, community-driven practice. What began as a small family operation has grown into a trusted name in prosthetics and orthotics, rooted in service, compassion, and excellence.
